Parakeet | Small to Medium-Sized Species of Parrot
Parakeet is a small-to-medium sized parrot species which can be seen in massive folks and of numerous kinds, usually with long tail feathers. The older spellings of Parakeet’s name are “Paroquet” or “Paraquet”. The name Parakeet is derivative from the French word “Perroquet” which means “Parrot in French”.
Parakeet Species
Australian Shell Parakeet, or “Budgerigar”, is a very common pet and the most famous parrot. The Australian Budgerigar, also recognized as ‘Budgie’, Melopsittacus undulatus, is possibly the best communal parakeet. It was initially labeled by the zoologists in the year 1891. The Australian Budgerigars are very common species of parakeet which are also being kept as pets in North America and Europe.
A large number of small-sized Australian Parakeets, also known as “Grass Parakeet” or “Grasskeet”, are native to the grasslands like species ‘Neophema’ and ‘Princess Parrot’. Australian Rosellas are also included in Parakeets family group. Similarly, various small-sized and long-tailed lories are also called “Lorikeets". Moreover, Ring-necked Parakeets are known from the species Psittacula which is native to Africa and Asia but it must not be confused with Australian Ring-neck species. The Ring-necked Parakeets have become very popular and being accepted as pets. However, this class is uncontrollable in various cities outside its natural range.
The small to medium sized Parakeets (called “Conure” in aviculture) are from the species group Aratinga, Pyrrhura, and a few other species of the family Arini, which are most widespread in South America. Because all these types are not from one species, therefore, the taxonomists tend to avoid this term. Other South American types generally known as Parakeets comprise the species “Brotogeris Parakeets”, “Monk Parakeet”, and “Lineolated Parakeets”. The Lineolateds Parakeets have small tails.
Similarly, a larger number of species have been identified as ‘Parrot’ or ‘Parakeet’. For instance, the two common types ‘Alexandrine Parrot’ and ‘Alexandrine Parakeet’ are from the same species named “Psittacula Eupatria” which is the biggest species generally called as ‘Parakeet’.
Various dissimilar species of Parakeets are produced and traded as pets. Budgerigar is the 3rd most famous parrot species (as pets) in the world after cats and dogs. Budgerigars are the best companions for everyone and they can be easily trained if kept with their parents.
Parakeets Breeding
Parakeets commonly breed in the groups more freely. However, there can be fights between breeding couples and individuals mostly when there is a limited space to live in. The breeding in groups is more successful because other Parakeets encourage couples to breed. Many breeders prefer to breed the Parakeets in pairs to reduce their fights. The females produce about six (6) to eight (8) eggs if successfully lay eggs.
